Code of Ethics in Photojournalism
Preamble
The following Code of Ethics is established to guide photojournalists in the execution of their duties and to maintain the integrity and trustworthiness of the photographic profession. Adherence to this code ensures that photojournalists uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct in the gathering, editing, and dissemination of visual information and images.
1. Accuracy and Representation
a. Photojournalists shall report with accuracy and truthfulness. They hold an obligation to ensure that their images convey the true essence of the events depicted.
b. Manipulation of images that distorts or misrepresents the context and content is prohibited, except for minor adjustments that do not alter the factual integrity of the photograph.
2. Independence and Neutrality
a. Photojournalists must maintain strict independence of thought and action. They must not participate in activities that may compromise or appear to compromise their impartiality.
b. They must avoid potential conflicts of interest and must disclose any unavoidable conflicts to their superiors or relevant authorities.
3. Respect for Subjects
a. Photojournalists are required to treat all subjects with respect and dignity. They must respect the rights of individuals to privacy and avoid infringing upon private moments unless there is an overriding public interest.
b. The exploitation of vulnerable individuals or groups by portraying them in a demeaning or sensational manner is strictly prohibited.
4. Accountability and Professional Conduct
a. Photojournalists must take responsibility for their work and are expected to provide prompt and accurate accounting of their actions and decisions.
b. They are to engage in ongoing self-assessment and be open to critique and changes that can improve their ethical standards and professional practices.
5. Integrity of the Profession
a. Photojournalists must hold the integrity of their profession above all else, avoiding actions that could bring discredit to the field of photojournalism.
b. They must be vigilant in protecting the trust accorded to them by the public and must aspire to foster credibility and accountability within their community.
This Code of Ethics serves as a foundational guide to professional behavior and decision-making processes for all individuals practicing photojournalism. Compliance with this Code is mandatory.
